1. Consult your nearest Canadian visa office about visa requirements, and to find out how long it might take to process your visa application. See Visas and Study Permits for more information.
2. Take the ELI Preliminary English Test to check if your English level is high enough to apply to the ELI. If you pass the test, fill out the UBC ELI Application Form and send it to the UBC ELI by mail, fax or the Internet with your payment. Please note that we will test your English again when you arrive, and if your score is much lower, we may recommend you attend a different school.
For the Intensive English Program, your deposit payment is $600 CDN for each program you apply for, plus a $150 CDN application fee. For all other programs, your deposit payment is $300 CDN for each program you apply for, plus a $150 CDN application fee. For examples, see the table below:
| Intensive English Program | Program Deposit | Application Fee | Total Deposit Payment |
| One Session or Term | $600 | $150 | $750 |
| Two Sessions or Terms | $1,200 (2 x $600) | $150 | $1,350 |
| All Other Programs | Program Deposit | Application Fee | Total Deposit Payment |
| One Program | $300 | $150 | $450 |
| Two Programs | $600 (2 x $300) | $150 | $750 |
You may make your payment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only), international money order, bank draft or wire transfer. Please see payment instructions for further details.
3. As soon as the UBC ELI has processed your completed UBC ELI Application Form and payment, we will send you a Student Information Package. Because the postal service may take 5-6 weeks or more to deliver your package in some countries and because you may need these documents to support your visa application, you may wish to take advantage of the courier service offered on our application form.

4. As part of your Student Information Package, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance from us. If you are applying for a Study Permit to come to Canada, you must take the Letter of Acceptance, a valid passport and proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Canada to your nearest Canadian visa office. A medical exam is required in some countries. The visa office will issue your Study Permit or give you an introduction letter, which you must show to the immigration officer when you arrive at Vancouver International Airport. The immigration officer will issue your Study Permit.
5. Fill in the UBC ELI Accommodation Placement Form if you want Homestay, Pre-Homestay Accommodation, Campus Accommodation or Airport Welcome Service. Send the form and payment to the UBC ELI. Space can fill up quickly, so apply early to avoid disappointment.
6. The UBC ELI will send confirmation of your Campus Accommodation and Airport Welcome service shortly after receiving your form and payment. If you apply for Homestay, you will be sent the name of your host family two weeks before the beginning of your program. If you are choosing Homestay, you may choose to stay in UBC campus housing for the first few nights (Pre-Homestay Accommodation). Homestay Placement Day is usually the first day of the program for our short programs, and the day before the program begins for the Intensive English Program (IEP). Once the program has begun, you will attend a Homestay orientation before you meet and go home with your host family on Homestay Placement Day.
7. The $300 program deposit ($600 for the Intensive English Program) guarantees you a place in the program until one month before the program's start-date; one month before your program's start date you must pay the balance of your tuition to guarantee your place. The balance of tuition is the tuition fee minus the program deposit. For example, if you are taking the IEP: $5,703 less $600 deposit = $5,103. We will continue to accept payments and applications until the program is full.
