Conditional Admission Program

If you have a strong record of academic achievement but do not yet meet the UBC English language admission standard, you may be eligible for conditional admission to a degree program at UBC's Vancouver campus.

As a conditionally admitted student, you are accepted into your chosen program on the condition that you develop your academic English to the required standard through our Intensive English Program.

Once you have been offered conditional admission to a UBC degree program, you will register for the Intensive English Program, which provides full-time English language training in either:

  • 16-week sessions scheduled to begin in January, May and September
  • 8-week accelerated session scheduled from July 3-August 23, 2012

You must complete three Intensive English Program (IEP) courses – Speaking/Listening, Reading, and Writing – at Level 600 and must achieve at least 75% in each course. You may meet these requirements in a single 16-week session or 8-week accelerated session. However, you have up to 12 months to meet these requirements.

Once you have successfully completed the IEP, you can proceed into your degree program.

Undergraduate Applicants

Check the Conditional Admission to Undergraduate Studies web page for information on conditional admission requirements, application processes and deadlines for undergraduate studies.

As a conditionally admitted student, you are able to enter your undergraduate program after you have passed the IEP. Many UBC undergraduate programs only begin in September. If you pass the 8-week accelerated IEP session in July-August, you can begin your degree program in September.

If your degree program requires First-Year English, you must meet the LPI requirement if you need to take one or more first-year English courses as part of your undergraduate program (see the UBC Academic Calendar for details). If your degree program does not require First-Year English, you do not need to take the LPI exam. Please note that the 16-week session of the IEP includes an LPI preparation course for CAP students. The 8-week accelerated session of the IEP does not include an LPI preparation course.

Graduate Applicants
