Andrew provides strategic direction and oversight of the UBC English Language Institute (ELI), and is a member of the Extended Learning Management Team. An applied linguist and a specialist in the English language teaching industry, Andrew focuses on quality enhancement and new programs at the ELI, as well as professional development programs for international English teachers through the ELI and the UBC Faculty of Education. He aspires to enable people from different cultures to create community through a common language, and is currently exploring the potential of virtual reality and artificial intelligence in language education.

Jas is responsible for the development and delivery of English language programs offered at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI). She oversees the instructional team to deliver programming for international students, directs instructors’ professional development and collaborates with other UBC units on English language programming. Jas liaises with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada for the Explore Program, and sits on the BC ESL Articulation Committee. She has taught and sat on boards of professional English as an additional language organizations in Canada, the Middle East and Japan, and is a frequent presenter at local and international conferences. Jas strives to create an inclusive and inspiring workplace where both students and staff are motivated to excel.

Lisa oversees all administrative functions of the UBC English Language Institute (ELI), providing leadership and direction in financial management, strategic planning, policy development and implementation, human resources, building and facilities management, and other activities. She works with all groups in the ELI and liaises with various Extended Learning teams, including finance and marketing, and with central UBC units such as building operations, human resources and IT.

Junko oversees the daily administrative operations of programs at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI). She provides technical and professional coordination for the programs support staff team, and develops and implements the systems and processes they require to create and maintain records. She also manages room bookings and building access for staff and instructors, and meets with ELI students to field questions they may have regarding their classes. Junko holds a bachelor of arts in political science from Meiji University in Tokyo and has more than 15 years of experience in education.

Brian works in the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) assisting the Director of Studies in hiring and overseeing casual and substitute instructors. He also prepares student evaluation surveys and reports for all ELI programs, and oversees instructors’ professional development budgets and in-class expenditures. Brian liaises with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada to help register bursary students into the Explore English program, and collaborates with the Extended Learning marketing team on ELI marketing communications. With close to 20 years’ experience teaching and administering English as an additional language programs in Canada and abroad, Brian believes acquiring fluency in a common language promotes the appreciation of other cultures, and our similarities and differences.

As a member of the UBC English Language Institute programs team, Joseph assists in the administration of exams, student placements and special projects. He’s also responsible for maintaining student records as well as online and physical resources for instructors. Joseph has close to two decades of experience administering a variety of international programs throughout the Americas and Europe. He’s proficient in German, and worked as an English language teaching assistant in Austria.
Student Services and Registration

Liliana is responsible for the smooth and efficient registration of students at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI). She’s also responsible for developing long-term partnerships with international scholarship providers, embassies and recruitment agents. Liliana works with ELI students and student services representatives to help interpret and implement registration policies and procedures. A dedicated lifelong learner, Liliana is pursuing a graduate program in Hispanic studies, and holds a bachelor’s in communications and a master’s in Latin American studies. She is a certified translator and is part of several education and research associations.

Natsuko manages the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) student services team for group enrolments and conditionally admitted students. She supports and participates in international recruitment efforts, with a focus on the Japanese market. Natsuko liaises with universities who send student groups to study English at the ELI, and co-manages relationships with agents and education consultants. She is fluent in English and Japanese.

Jazmin oversees the day-to-day work of the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) student services representatives who handle the approximately 2,000 part- and full-time student applications received each year. She coordinates and processes program inquiries and applications, creates, tracks and sends program correspondence, provides front-line assistance and advice to prospective and current learners, and supports all ELI recruitment activities. Jazmin also identifies and makes recommendations for processes, systems and services improvements, and uses analytics to streamline staff priorities.

She also processes applications and student fees for prospective students, and advises students on visa requirements, medical insurance and student accommodations, including homestay placements.

Before joining the ELI, Rich enjoyed a technical career in the music recording industry. He is interested in continuous improvement and in finding elegant solutions for audio-visual problems.

He also supports various ongoing projects, and works closely with ELI’s Administrative Manager. With his interdisciplinary background and experience as a teacher, Jonathan is comfortable and skilled at engaging with instructors, students and staff at the ELI and various UBC units. An advocate for open resources, he strives to make post-secondary education accessible to students throughout their academic careers.

Kerstin coordinates homestay placements that allow international students to live with Canadian families while they study at the UBC English Language Institute. She uses her 15 years of placement experience to screen and interview prospective host families to find the best fit for both students and homestays. A great homestay experience in a nurturing and supportive environment helps ensure success for international students and can offer insight and education for hosts. Kerstin guides, assists and supports students and their host families with any issues that may arise during the rewarding homestay adventure.

With a background in health sciences and business administration, Lisa strives to ensure an enjoyable homestay experience for both students and hosts alike.

Mieko works at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) where she arranges homestay placements for international students who wish to live with a Canadian family while attending the ELI. Her main responsibilities are to match students from abroad with appropriate host families, provide ongoing communication with families and students, and to perform administrative duties relating to homestay placements. It’s Mieko’s aim to create a bridge between international students and the communities in which they live and study through positive homestay experiences.

Michael manages the Socio-Cultural Program at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) and leads a team of cultural assistants. Together, they create extracurricular activities that allow ELI students to practise English outside of the classroom while learning about Vancouver, UBC and Canadian culture. In addition to supporting students and building a strong community at the ELI, Michael manages student staff in the Work Learn program, which gives UBC Vancouver students opportunities to develop their professional skills.

In addition to supporting and overseeing the cultural assistant (CA) team at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI), Jason plans events and manages logistics for activities held during the ELI students’ stay at UBC. He plays an important role connecting CAs, management, students and administrative staff as he books transportation and accommodation, procures event tickets, and provides reception support. Jason’s degree in international relations and time spent living in several African countries have given him a global world view that helps him relate to the diverse range of students enrolled at the ELI.

Simon is responsible for supporting and training the UBC English Language Institute (ELI) team of cultural assistants (CAs). Working with the CAs and other campus groups, he organizes large-scale socio-cultural activities, events and trips for UBC ELI students. A student in the UBC Creative Writing program and English literature department, Simon enjoys connecting students to resources, guiding and mentoring his peers, and supporting intercultural exchange. When he’s not working at the UBC ELI, he tutors at the UBC Centre for Accessibility.

As the human resources representative for UBC Extended Learning, Jasmine provides advice and recommendations to managers and staff regarding university-wide HR policies and procedures, and ensures managers are in compliance with these policies and with collective agreements. Jasmine has a broad range of responsibilities, from providing guidance on recruitment, salary, performance and other staffing activities, to reviewing, analyzing and interpreting various HR policies, systems and procedures. Jasmine stays up to date with provincial updates to labour standards and gains insight into new and emerging HR practices by regularly attending CPHR (Chartered Professionals in Human Resources) roundtables.

Jordan prepares and processes financial documents for the UBC English Language Institute (ELI), including requisitions for payments, travel advances, and domestic and international travel claims. The primary point of contact for accounts payable and all financial inquiries for the UBC ELI, Jordan is responsible for interpreting financial policies and procedures, and ensuring accounting practices adhere to University policies. With more than 10 years’ experience in accounting positions in the retail and private sectors, Jordan brings a passion for research and investigation to his role, skills indispensable to preparing accurate financial statements.
