Depending on whether your group is looking for a university or home setting, the English Language Institute (ELI) offers accommodation both in UBC residences (on-campus) and with Homestay host families around Vancouver. Residence (campus stay) is available each year from mid-May to mid-August; Homestay is available year-round.
From mid-May through mid-August, participants can choose campus stay in one of UBC's campus residences (dormitories). With residence (campus stay), students have the opportunity to meet both Canadian and international students and experience life on campus. Residence (campus stay) is subject to availability. Fees do not include meals.
Homestay offers participants the opportunity to live with a Canadian family and learn more about Canadians. Students may choose Homestay for their entire stay or they can choose to stay for just a short time.
Host families are chosen for their interest in foreign students and their willingness to include students in daily family life. ELI Homestay placement staff visit each host family and take great care to match ELI students and families who have mutual interests. Host families are selected carefully with students' safety and comfort in mind.
If your group requires Homestay, they may need short-term accommodation before they meet their host family on the first day of the program. For this purpose, pre-Homestay is available for two days prior to the start of each program. Those in pre-Homestay may share a room with two or three other new ELI students. Meals are not included in pre-Homestay accommodation, but food is available in cafeterias and restaurants are nearby.
